Launched to mark the official two year countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the new Destination Greenwich App is a useful guide for all visitors to the Olympic host borough. As well as 2012 news, the App provides details of where to go and what to see during a visit to Greenwich.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Greenwich, in south-east London, is famous for being the home of time and the birthplace of Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I and is known for historic landmarks such as the National Maritime Museum, the Old Royal Naval College, the Cutty Sark and Greenwich Park, London's oldest Royal Park.
As Greenwich starts its preparations to be a host borough for London 2012, as well as its appointment as a Royal Borough in 2012, the borough is gearing up to welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors.
Focused on all things 2012, App users can find out which Olympic and Paralympic sporting events are happening and where and check out the schedule of events.
A great place of culture, one of the ways Greenwich will be making its exciting and distinctive contribution to Games Time celebrations will be through The Greenwich Festivals. The Greenwich Festivals will provide some of the best and most varied entertainment in London from street theatre to comedy and film, music to suit all tastes and invigorating dance performances. Details of all these events in the lead up to, and during Games Time, will be available on the App.
In addition to world-class sports and entertainment, Greenwich is steeped in world-class heritage, with a rich mix of museums, galleries, architecture, maritime history, parks and palaces. Greenwich is indeed a place that has something for everyone.
Within the Destination Greenwich App, the Treasure icon allows users to select places of interest to visit by choosing their current location and finding the nearest attraction or by using a map. Once a treasure has been selected, users can tap on the audio button and listen as local actor Nick Day provides fascinating insight to the wealth of Greenwich's history.
The App is available to download for free from the Apple Store. For more information visit or go to www.destinationgreenwich.com.
